The Piano in a Factory
While China still produces more than half of the world's steel, the industry isn't what it used to be, especially in China's northeastern provinces. This 2010 film by Zhang Meng looks at the decline of the steel industry in a northeastern town in the 1990s. Some former workers, now retooled as musicians, use abandoned equipment to produce a piano made out of steel for the main character's daughter, an aspiring musician herself. You won't want to miss the paso doble on the factory floor!
